Juliann talking about this experience with a student teacher made me think of a
commitment I made to myself a few years ago.  I had heard one or two library
friends comment before how they "hated" doing this or that for those "student
teachers."  I think I've been a little fortunate in that most of the student
teachers we've had over the past several years (I can't remember back over all 21!
Ha..) have wanted to utilize the library...and I did not want to do anything to
discourage that...I wanted to utilize it.  In the past I usually checked out items
through the teacher they were mentoring under.  I started first by just getting
them to give me info. to just put them in our system using their phone number as
their ID #.  Two years ago I made up a form that I give to all new student teachers
once I've had a chance to corner them.  They can select which college they are in
(we have three local colleges) and I have those already entered into my
system.  When these future teachers get into a classroom, I want them to take a
positive experience with them...because I have heard teachers talk before about the
"awful librarian" they had back in their student teaching days.

I had even thought about asking whoever was over student teaching at each of the
colleges to allow a school librarian to come and talk about proper procedures,
utilizing materials, etc.  But that has not made it beyond the "thinking" stage
yet! :)

In Juliann's case...I think it's that "you can lead a horse to water but you can't
make him drink" phrase...  As I told her in a private e-mail...you can't help
ignorance if someone wants to stay ignorant!

Subject: VENT: libraries are obsolete

We have a student teacher in the building that is studying for the Praxis exam. He
wants to be an English teacher. He was looking for a book to read today and told me
that : A. He didn't have a library card. B. Libraries are obsolete. This is also
the same person who told me last month "I forgot, which one is fiction and which
one is non-fiction."

Is this what future English teachers are like now?! I told him that libraries are
not obsolete. You need a book and you don't have it. You can get it for free at
your library. How are they obsolete?

I just had to vent to people that would understand, even if it's a virtual vent.
Thanks!
