Pemba's Song by Marilyn Nelson and Tonya C. Hegamin--A short novel (109 pages)
which is perfect for reluctant readers. Pemba, an African-American teen, and her
widowed mother move to Connecticut, and she is unhappy about it--she misses her
friends, and even her cell phone doesn't work there. Once she is settled in the
old house, Pemba knows something is unusual, and begins having blackouts, during
which she sees a young slave woman who lived in this same house many years
before--and who now needs Pemba's help.

"Books have three
of the deadliest foes
on this Earth:
fire,
water, and ignorant men...
...books are the finest treasures of all.
You
need only feast once with your eyes
and your heart.
And you'll be
 full with their wisdom
forever." (Melanie Little, The Apprentice's
Masterpiece)

"Librarians...have
been my lifelong friends, guides and heroes." Joseph Bruchac
