Hi Folks--

If you're looking for some professional development fun this summer, I
wanted to let you know about the upcoming BER (Bureau of Education & Research;
www.BER.org) two-day Children's Literature Conference that I'll be doing with
two colleagues in Chicago (July 17-18) and Minneapolis (July 19-20) next
month. To register, first look up the brochure at <
http://www.ber.org/seminars/seminar_schedule.cfm?location=CHN&group=E> for Chicago,
and <
http://www.ber.org/seminars/seminar_schedule.cfm?location=MIN&group=E> for
Minneapolis.
(To navigate your way there, go to www.BER.org, click on SEMINARS, then click
on K-6, then IL or MN on the map, then K-6, them CHICAGO NORTH or
MINNEAPOLIS. Whew. You can also call BER at: 1-800-735-3503.

My very wonderful cohorts are Anita Silvey, former editor of Horn Book
Magazine, publisher at Houghton Mifflin, and author of Everything I Need to Know
I Learned from a Children's Book (Roaring Brook, 2009); and Barbara Swanson
Sanders, children's literature consultant, teacher, and former bookstore
owner. We've been calling ourselves the Three Amazons, and this is the third
summer we'll be traveling together. Can't wait! This is a busman's holiday
for me, hanging out with these amazing women, and laughing myself silly for 4
crazy days.

Each of us will be presenting a wide variety of sessions on every aspect of
children's literature. Over the two days, we'll each be doing 7 individual
workshops. (Gasp.) Our emphasis will be on unforgettable books no teacher or
librarian can live without, plus a wealth of practical strategies and
innovative ideas that you can use immediately in your K-6 classroom or library.
Your dilemma will be picking which sessions you most want to attend.

Today I got a copy, hot off the press, of the newly-revised, just published
Resource Handbook you get when you attend the conference. It's over 500
pages! Pretty darn spiffy, jampacked with lesson plans, activities, worksheets,
ideas, and booklists for each of the 21 sessions offered, even those you
don't get to attend.

Our goal is to help you strengthen your own children's literature program
with loads of new books and lots of innovative ways you can use them with
your students. I'll be bringing as many books as the airlines will let me
carry, samples of students' work, props, puppets, stories, my little Backpacker
guitar, and then some for our sizzling summer show-and-tell bookfest. What I
particularly love is getting to do individual workshops on Storytelling,
Creative Drama and Reader's Theater, and even a Hi Ho Librario session where we
sing silly book-related songs. (What I don't love is that I'm so busy
giving my own workshops, I don't get to sneak into Anita and Barbara's rooms to
see what they're doing. Drat!)

If you need a spa sabbatical and can't afford Canyon Ranch, it makes for a
great little vacation. I love going to Chicago and Minneapolis because
they're such total children's lit. cities, and they're both beautiful in the
summer.

If you know any children's book-obsessed people you think would like to
know about our conference, could you forward this e-mail to them or put it on
your blog or local listserv or on Facebook or Tweet or something? We get
nervous that we won't get enough enrollment and it'll get canceled (though BER
told me today it's running! Hooray!), or people won't know it's happening and
then they'll weep because they didn't get to come hang out with us.

I hope I'll see some of you there. If you come, please come up & introduce
yourself! We'll have a party!

Judy
