I've been thinking about this off and on today. On the one hand, we
librarians tend to be early adopters of new things, and it comes as no
surprise that we are the ones pushing for subscription online databases.

On the other hand, books aren't as easily taken out of service. My
school is out in the country, but right on a major highway. We've had a
tornado pop out of the sky literally across the road from us. We've had
vehicles knock out electricity. We've had ice storms knock out all
electricity in the county. We've had construction workers uproot phone
lines. No matter what the problem, though, the books were available to
use.

As I look at the pile of today's returned books, most of them are
fiction books. Kids are still reading, but they are using nonfiction
books less. Missouri recently revised our periodical standards to
reflect the fact that periodicals are not as necessary for research
anymore because the State provides us with access to several quality
databases. As they come up for renewal, I'm evaluating each periodical. 
If it is used frequently, I'll keep it. If not, I'll drop it, and add
another title that is more likely to appeal to my students.

Are school libraries irrelevant? Not in my mind. A library is simply a
place where a person can get what they need, whether it be fiction or
nonfiction, pleasure reading or serious research. Many libraries will
report that _Consumer's Reports_ is one of the most-used periodicals
they have. Why? Their information is NOT available on the Internet. It
may be that in the future they will follow the lead of _The Wall Street
Journal_ and make some content available for free, while other content
is by subscription only. When that happens, they may decide to save some
money and drop the print version. Until then, though, the print copy is
still going to be in demand.

Way back in the 1960's and 70's, when computers were first showing up,
the prediction was that they would eliminate the need for paper. 
Everything could be done on the computer. How has that worked out in
your school? We have a storage room here that is packed with boxes of
paper in August. We're out of some colors of paper now (with three
months of school yet to go), and we can see the end of other colors. By
the time summer school comes around in June teachers will be fighting
each other for the last of the paper.

Has the computer lived up to the promises that were made 40 years ago? 
No. Has it exceeded the wildest dreams of 40 years ago? Yes. The
computer is simply another tool in our toolkit to help our students,
faculty, staff, and parents find what they are looking for.

Several years ago, a couple of freshmen girls came to me and asked if I
knew anything about computers. When I admitted that I did, they
explained that they were having some difficulty with the computer in
another room. As they explained the problem, I was pretty sure that I
knew what needed to be done, but I decided to have a bit of fun with
them. I grabbed my Precision Computer Attitude Adjusting Tool and went
with them. They traded terrified glances with each other as we went down
the hall. I spoke sternly to the offending computer, set the tool on the
top of it, and proceeded to type the correct command. The computer
promptly behaved, I took my tool with me, and left them staring at the
computer. Had they been working in the library, where I could have seen
them, the problem would have been solved in the time it took them to
walk to the library.

libraries around the country.The video visits look like this--During a
video conference, which usually lasts about 45-minutes (the average
length of a class), I tell about the background of the book or books in
question, discuss the writing process, answer questions about my work,
ask the students questions about themselves, and encourage students in
their own writing. The conferences usually go very well, and a great
time is generally had by all, including me. I keep the honorarium at a
very low $200."

Many wanted a hit posted. Only a few responses, but these are the
responses=  I've received. I also found out that Amazon won't allow the
Kindle in libr= aries. Here are the responses:



I've been trying out a Nook from B&N and I don't really care for it.
The s= creen "flashes" when it is switching pages and it is headache
inducing for = me.  I also don't like that the only touch-screen piece
is a small window a= long the bottom that doesn't seem very responsive.
It is frustrating for m= e because there doesn't seem to be a way to
create an account without enter= ing your credit card information. I'm
not willing to do that for a device b= eing used by students and there
doesn't seem to be any way around this unle= ss they are downloading
free e-pub  or PDF books and loading them through t= he computer as
opposed to directly from B&N.  Since the touch screen is so = small, the
searching feature has been frustrating to me as well- you have t= o type
into the small keyboard image, but it is difficult since I often hit=
the wrong letters by mistake. I'm not a technophobe either- I love and
use=  all sorts of technology in my personal life and my teaching, but
e-readers=  won't be added to that list.

This probably isn't what you want, but I have an iPod Touch, and have
loaded both Kindle and B&N readers on it. Being a cheapskate, I only
download free books for each. When I finish one I add another.

The biggest issue that I've seen with the various ebook readers is that
they are designed for personal use, not library use, and a credit card
is associated with each one. That means that anyone who has one of those
readers is authorized to purchase additional books. I suspect that
whoever has one is also authorized to delete any books already on it.

For my money, I'll stick to regular books for the library until someone
comes up with a better solution.

I have a Sony eReader for personal use, a 500 model (which was probably
mad= e in 2006).  I really enjoy, its very sturdy, lightweight, and easy
to use.

Advantages for library checkout is that you have to have the program
loaded=  on your computer to move files on or off, and it is NOT
connected to any c= redit card or the internet.  You can read .rtf,
.gif, .pdf, and .lrf (Sony =
proprietary) files, and maybe some others.

Disadvantages for library checkout is that you have to have the program
loa= ded on your computer to move files on or off, and that the battery
life dro= ps as it ages.  It used to be good for 3-4 books, and I had a
lot of warnin= g before it shut down for a low battery.  Now, it is good
for about 2.5, an= d it goes from half charged to dead within a hundred
page turns.
If you went with a new Sony eReader, I would reccomend the one that is
$199= , because there is less to go wrong with it, and people can't
customize and=  make notes.  The one for $299/399 (not sure which) has a
touch screen, and=  a stylus to loose, and other issues.

I chose the Sony ereader for my school...  for two reasons...students
can't=  wirelessly download any book they want, which is what I
understand is a gr= eat function on Kindle and (probably Nook)  for
individuals but not for sch= ools.  The device must be linked to an
account and a specific computer (not=  hard to change the computer) but
gives you a little more control over what=  goes on them.  The other
reason is the option to put .pdf documents on the= m, as far as I could
tell the others didn't accept pdf format.  I have seve= ral books
received from publisher websites on pdf and could only read them = on
the computer until I got the readers.  We got the Sony pocket for
199.00=  but I think the larger touch would be better (I think it has a
touch scree= n instead of buttons on the side) and the screen is a
little bigger.

I have only checked out one to a student...am putting together a use
form t= o take home and be signed before check-out.  Possibly only upper
classmen (= jrs and srs)...not sure yet.  Hope this info is
