My English Department is divided over whether to use citation tools or
not. Some say Citation Machine developed by David Warlick is obsolete.
I have assured the ones that use it that it is up to date with the
current MLA 7th Ed. Handbook (2009). I have also looked at EasyBib and
NoodleBibExpress which are also both current.

I teach at a high school and there are approximately 12 English
teachers. There are teachers that think the only way to teach
bibliographic instruction is by using the OWL Purdue Writing Lab and its
MLA format. Neither is wrong. But, it creates confusion among the
students when one teacher is using Citation Machine and the others are
saying that it is obsolete. I want to try to get them to see that
neither is wrong as long as they refer to the MLA 7th Ed. handbook to
make sure that the way the tools or the OWL have it is correct. All
were done by humans and humans make mistakes. These things are only as
good as what you put into it and it is easier for the students. Am I
wrong?

David Warlick has an adaptation of using a subscription service accessed
through a library. Last year, this was correct and if I am reading the
MLA handbook correctly, it says on page 189,

"Whittier, John G. “A Prayer.” The Freedmen’s Book. Ed. L. Maria Child.
Boston, 1866. 178. Google Book Search. Web. 15 May 2008.

You may add supplementary information about the database or Web site
(such as the name of its editor, sponsor, or publisher) following its
name.

Ovid. Metamorphoses. Trans. Arthur Golding. London, 1567. The Perseus
Digital Library. Ed. Gregory Crane. Tufts U. Web. 12 Mar. 2007.

If you need to include a URL, follow the guidelines in 5.6.1. See 5.6.4
for periodical print publications in online databases." So, while I
told them this adaptation is not wrong, in order to be uniform to use
the one directly above it, which is "Works from a subscription service".

I have noticed on LM_Net that a lot of you use citation tools like
Citation Machine, Noodle Bib Express and EasyBib. Do you have thoughts
about using tools such as these? Some of the teachers will ask me to
help in instruction and some won't. Therefore, I go by what the teacher
requests. Is this wrong to do?

Would there be a way to try and get everyone on the same page, so there
is some consistency? Please share your thoughts. Thank you for your
time.

Sincerely,
Denise Snyder
