I just received my 3/1/10 copy of "Booklist" which has ALA's 2010 Best Lists. Does anyone notice a major fiction genre missing from ALA's 2010 genre lists? Here is a hint. What is the only literary genre to have originated in the United States or fill in the blank within the following statement: "Jazz and the _________ are the only truly unique American art forms." Clint Eastwood Of course, the answer is the WESTERN. Why would a national organization such as the American Library Association make the conscious decision to exclude the best 2010 titles of our national genre? East coast/west coast bias? Surely not anti-American? I and many librarians who have collections of Westerns, purchase Westerns, and have numerous patrons/students who read Westerns would like an answer. If, by some miracle I get an actual answer, I will post it.
