Hi,
I wanted to share a really unique and amazing project that is going on at my school
this year. Charise Harper, the author and illustrator of the Just Grace and the
Fashion Kitty series, and many wonderful picture books, is a parent in my district.
She's creating a new picture book called "Henry's Heart" and she's involving all
the K-2 students in my building in the process. Every Monday, Charise sets up her
art studio in our "old" library, and brings along ideas for hands-on stations to
allow the children to understand and be a part of the process of bringing this book
from rough manuscript to finished project.
Charise has set up a website (www.henrysheartthebook.com) to detail the progress of
the book and the project, plus the kids are encouraged to blog and contact her with
any comments or ideas. The site is full of photos and wonderful videos that the
kids love going back to. The local paper just ran a great article about the

her and her work.
I have to say that the success of this project lies on the fact that Charise has an
incredible personality, knows and enjoys her audience, and works hard to make this
an exciting and hands-on experience for our students. I've been blown away by how
she's been able to bring the children into all the different decisions and emotions
that come with moving a story idea to a finished product. If you're looking for a
visiting author, I can't recommend Charise enough. She is a delight to work with,
