It was suggested that I post a hit of books for the 3rd grade boy
reading on an 8th grade level. Hope you all can find this as helpful as
I did. Many thanks to all of you who helped out and contributed!

City of Ember series (DuPrau),

Sea of Trolls series and The Ear, the Eye and the Arm (Farmer)

The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien

Anything by Avi

Maximum Ride series by Patterson

Secrets of Droon series by Abbott

The Children of the Red King series by Jenny Nimmo

Ranger's Apprentice by John Flannaghan is awesome. Very clean and all
about a little guy who learns that he is valuable with the help of a
"teacher." There's 7 books in the series, and the series is medieval
times, with a few monsters thrown in for good measure. The first is
"Ruins of Gorlan." There's also the Alex Rider series by Horowitz. Boys
LOVE it.
