Here is my original request: A few weeks ago, someone sent out great information that included a formula to figure out how many shelves you need for the number of books in your collection. It also included other information to consider when building a new library. Would someone please send it to me again? Thanks! Thanks for all the responses. Here are the great answers I received: Thanks to the South Carolina Librarians who have a fantastic booklet for new school libraries. I wish I had had this before we started the remodel: http://www.libraryworks.com/LW_Best%20Practices/BP_Media_Center_Design.pdf Mackin also sent me a document which might be helpful. It doesn’t have a formula for shelving, but it is what they send out for new libraries. You can contact ann.mansfield@mackin.com . She will be happy to send it to you. She was very helpful when I contacted her. Another person said, “The company we went with when we moved into a new location (School Specialty) figured all that mathematically for us when they ordered the shelves.” “I don't know where I got it from but here's the calculation I've used in the past: Industry suggested amount of shelving, elementary: 18 books per linear foot Shelves are 36” wide = 3 linear feet” Cheri Horyna Library Media Specialist Hutchinson High School 1401 N.
