Coming to DC for ALA Annual?

Here's a pre-conference not to miss!

Copyright Issues for Librarians: Understanding What's Legal, What's Fair
and What's Best Practice

Thursday, June 24, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (includes lunch)

DC Convention Center, Room 144 A/C

This interactive program explores the complexity of issues librarians
face in managing copyrighted materials while striving to connect users,

their day to day work, participants will gain experience in assessing
the copyright status of a work, identifying the appropriate provision(s)
of copyright law to address particular situations, performing fair use
analyses, and interpreting institutional copyright policies to assess
risk. Lunch speakers include Professors Peter Jaszi and Pat Aufderheide
from American University who will discuss "fair use best practices for
libraries," a new 3-year project sponsored by the Mellon Foundation.

All proceeds from the pre-conference will be donated to the Robert L.
Oakley Memorial Scholarship Fund, to establish a scholarship/study grant
in the amount of $3,000 for librarians in early or mid career conducting
research in the fields that greatly interested Mr. Oakley-copyright,
public policy and library services to communities.
