I recently read the story "Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed" by Emily Pearson to a third grade class in my school. The story illustrates the concept of paying it forward (doing something nice for someone else after you have been the recipient of an act of kindness). This third grade teacher and I collaborated on a 'Pay It Forward" project which involved sending "pay it forward" boxes to twelve third grade classes and keeping track of the acts of kindness that resulted (we won a $500 grant from our local newspaper to do this). We are opening up this project to other classrooms and I would like to invite elementary LMS to either forward the website link below to your classroom teachers, or take on the project with classes in your school. All of the details are one the website: http://www.thirdgraderspayitforward.net Our students wrote a letter to our Mayor, who proclaimed April 29th "Pay It Forward Day" in our city, and we also contacted our New York State Senator who submitted a resolution requesting a similar proclamation for New York State. Our students have discovered from this project that they can make a difference, and I would like to invite other classes to join us as we strive to reach 1,000 acts of kindness by the end of the school year!
