Hi All, This year, for the first time ever, we created Literary Lunchrooms in our junior high building. We'd like to improve on the program next year, and would love to hear feedback from schools who have created a similar program. I'm including info on our program below, so you can see how that compares to things you've done. Here's how our program worked: Students are allowed to leave the cafeteria to eat their lunch in a classroom. The classrooms are supervised by teachers, and students are required to read something of their choice while they eat their lunch. Students are encouraged to bring their own reading materials, but books, newspapers, and magazines were also provided. We received grant funding from our local Teacher's Center to purchase the newspaper subscriptions. The nature of the program required building-wide participation, as we needed approval from the principal, and their cooperation in assigning teachers to a reading room as a duty. Because our reading rooms meet in a different location each period, we created a cart that is pushed from room to room. Our cart holds a variety of materials, including newspapers, books, a sign in sheet, and supplies to clean up any messes that students make while eating their lunches. We did a lot of advertising, including posters and huge display, and English teachers talked it up in their classrooms. The goal, or whole purpose of the program, was to relieve overcrowding in the cafeteria and encourage the development of ELA skills. We had okay student participation, but we'd love to up that for next year, and develop a steadier supply of "customers." Looking forward to your suggestions!
