While many salons are more inclined to trash leftovers from its latest trim, some in North Texas are bagging and shipping it to help with what will soon be a massive oil spill cleanup along the Gulf Coast. Matter of Trust<http://matteroftrust.org/>, a San Francisco nonprofit, recycles the hair scraps and turns it into small mats that help absorb oil. The mats look like large S.O.S. pads. Other hair is made into booms after being packed into used nylon. An Alabama hairstylist thought up the idea, but Lisa Gautier brought the idea to fruition by handing out 1,000 of them during the 1997 Bay Bridge oil spill. That spill dumped 58,000 gallons of oil into the San Francisco bay and left globs of it soaking on the shoreline. rest of story at http://cbs11tv.com/local/oil.spill.hair.2.1675291.html Mary Croix Ludwick, Librarian Thomas Haley Elementary K-5 Irving ISD, Texas mludwick@irvingisd.net<mailto:mludwick@irvingisd.net> 972-600-7059 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
