Please disregard this message. I was (I thought) answering a colleague's question
about our morning news program and somehow replied to LM_NET instead! Weird...

Yes there will be those kids who try to spend the time socializing but in =
my experience it is about age group- 3rd and 4th graders have the least =
amount of time browsing...more than half the period is a lesson. Yes I =
preselect for the very young. That said, the kids know that library class =
rules are the same as other subjects. Attention, participation and =
appropriate behavior. If they are not actively looking for a book, =
checking out a book or recommending a book, they are sitting quietly =
reading or sharing a book. third and fourth grade have the option of =
writing as well as reading or making cartoons. If I catch a kid doing none =
of those, they become my helpers to reshelve and prep for another class.

A few weeks ago someone put out the idea of making book spine poems during =
Poetry Month. Poetry isn't my thing=2C but I feel an obligation to do some=
thing with it=2C so I thought I'd try the spine idea. It really worked out=
well. I tried it with third grade=2C but it could have been done with many=
grades. I pulled lots of books that I could visualize maybe being part of =
a poem=2C and spread them out on the tables. I then told them what we were=
going to do=2C and gave them the example I'd come up with. I had these bo=
oks--Monster Trucks=3B Very Scary=3B Oops!=3B Oh=2C Rats!=3B It Wasn't My F=
ault. Not great=2C but not too bad=2C either. I then turned the kids loos=
e. The first group I didn't put any limits on number of books they could u=
se. That was a mistake. Some of the kids used every book on the table=2C =
and just put them in a pile. The next two groups I limited them to between=
4-7 books. That worked a lot better. Of course=2C with no "poetry" lesso=
n from me to prepare them for doing this=2C some were just piles of books. =
But=2C there were several in each class that caught on to what I wanted=2C=
and had things that made sense. Not a lot of what I would actually call p=
oetry (mine wasn't either)=2C but good use of the books. So=2C if you were =
wondering about trying it=2C I say go ahead. I'm going to do it again next=
year. Thanks to whoever had the idea. There is a website with pictures t=

Those are the great teachable moments! They are opportunities we have ever=

them see us in our best light--helping them find a great book instead shush=

Why? Because some kiddos will take the whole period wandering around the
library, not to be actually connecting with a book but just to be wandering=

visiting with friends, playing with the shelf markers.....
