Hello, I asked how to take care of a rare book & to find it's value. Here are my responses: I would call the nearest university library that has a special collections/rare book department and ask for advice. They will be able to help for sure. I've collected rare books for over 30 years. If true first, its value is about $10,000. Visit the following for bibliographic info/market value--type in author/title: Antiquarian Book Exchange http://www.abebooks.com/ I would put it in a ziplock bag or Saran wrap, wrap it in bubble wrap, and place it in a bank safety deposit box--rent small ones for $15-25 a year. The simplest and cheapest if you want to keep it at home and display it is to wrap it in Saran Wrap--keeps air/dust from it but can still see cover. You can also visit a comic book store and ask for a archival poly bag. You can buy them on internet from "Bags Unlimited" but if you only need one, try a dealer. Highsmith, Gaylord sell inexpensive archival, acid free storage boxes/ clamshell boxes. You can also have a custom storage box made which looks like the book for $75-150--internet keywords: rare books clamshell boxes. I have been on our county historical commission and as such, I have looked at museum supply companies that are very much like our library supply companies. They have different kinds of acid-free envelopes and coverings that you might check out. I understand that dust is probably the most devastating assault on old paper, so keeping it dust-free is important. I'm sorry I don't remember any of those museum supply company names because I did not order that much, but I'll bet a Google search for museum supplies will bring up a bunch. Thank you so much for your help, Julie Feenaughty School Librarian Canisteo-Greenwood School Library 84 Greenwood Street Canisteo, NY 14823 jfeenaughty@cgcsd.org -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
