That is basically an old wive's tale. I've had books wrapped in Saran
wrap/ziplock bags for 20 years without any damage--has anyone actually
seen a book damaged just by being wrapped in plastic. Theoretically,
I suppose a book in a plastic bag after 100 or 200 years might be
affected? Obviously, if you have a valuable book, you would be
willing to buy inert mylar or poly bag(s)--usually have to buy in
packs of 25-100 at a time. However, if you just have one book that is
why i suggested visiting a comic or book store--the store might just
sell you one bag.
What is important is keeping the air away from the book and minimizing
the change in storage temperature.
