I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some research-based info about how the proper spaces and resources are necessary for optimal teaching of 21st Century information skills and for library media specialist/teacher collaboration and teaching. We have no lab in our building of about 600 6-8 graders - only 3 laptop labs. If I want to work with a teacher to integrate information skills into a lesson, I have to close down the library or leave the library to do it, and we have to hope to be able to get access to a cart that day. My library's layout wastes a tremendous amount of space, and could be redesigned to better meet the needs of those using the library for "traditional" uses and those needing it for more technology enhanced tasks. My principal and I want to redesign and renovate the space, and wall off a portion for library classroom/lab which would include room for our broadcast studio which now looks like it fell out of the sky into the middle of the library. Before me make this proposal to the higher-ups, I was hoping to find some solid evidence that shows that labs/library classrooms, complete with things like interactive white boards have a valid reason for being. We all know that we have plenty to teach to all students and most of us don't have the right spaces in which to do it, but I need some research. Any ideas?
