Carol (and others) After 30 + years teaching I noticed many of the parents of my students had been my students at one time and I looked at the overdues from another viewpoint. I used it as a teachable moment for the parents and crafted a letter like this: (I don't have the original any more unfortunately.) Dear______________ The book Johnny has checked out has never returned. We've checked the shelves and the classroom but the book never came in. No one likes to pay for a lost book, but unfortunately these things happen. This can be used as a teachable moment to show your child the way to take responsibility for doing the right thing when they do lose a book. Your example will be a lesson that will make a lasting impact on your child. Thanks for your help. I never had a parent who protested and they always paid up. Hope this helps. (Wish I could find the original but I left it on the school computer when I retired from teaching.)
