Hello all,
Thank you everyone for responding to my query about 8th/9th grade
research projects, they are very helpful. A few people asked for a hit
so here are some of the responses.

Our 8th grade does an Oral History project and 7th grade does a Famous
Women project. Our junior school also does a project on a wonder of the
world (ancient, modern, engineering, etc.)

I do web pages on the solar system with some of my 8th graders. We have
the more capable students create a treasure hunt and the less able do 15
facts with 2-6 pictures. I also do a photo story project with 8th grade
on the civil war and the same project modified with the music classes on
popular and jazz musicians.

Our 8th grade ELA research paper topic is the 1940’s and is used with
the novel, A Separate Peace- John Knowles. Many topics are researched
including people, events (WWII- from all fronts), art, music, etc. Grade
9- ELA- research the Renaissance before reading Romeo and Juliet. This
research paper teaches the process, especially internal citations.

Our 9th graders do a research paper on new technology. They choose a
topic from areas like cell phone technology, automobiles, medical
advances, etc. So far they’ve done stem cell research for diabetes,
hybrid cars, iPhones, iPads, etc. This is the second year for the topic-
only qualification is that it has to be within the last ten years.

A persuasive essay on a current event or controversial issue- combine
with science or social studies teachers- adoption, fast-food, facebook,
gun control, etc.

Our 9th grade classes have to do a report on a career they will be
interested in pursuing.

We do a WWII/Holocaust research paper in 9th grade and read Night by
Elie Wiesel.

We’ve had an English teacher do brochures for the counselor’s office. We
have a number of books on social subjects, teen angst, etc. and they
choose for example: STDS, bi-polar disorder, negative body image, teen
drinking, etc. They design the brochure with “what to look for” signs,
how to get help, treatment, list of websites, and a phone number. For
example, for teen runaways, the national hot-line number was listed.
Their “research” is actually displayed in the counselor’s office and can
be used by students. Another brochure idea is that social studies
teachers did a brochure (travel) for countries- anything from African
countries to Europe.
