Sounds strange... But years ago I purchased these pointers/wands at the Georgia Children's Lit. Conference in Athens, GA. These are clear, approx. a foot long, hollow inside and filled with "stuff." One of them has these small red beads and small shapes...maybe stars, circles, etc...all very small. The other one has small black beads and small stars and moons. I have used these over ten years with Pre and K classes as "book wands." They give me the power to select students who have been sitting quietly and listening to get up when I tap them and select a book. Most of the year I use the one with the small red beads, but I tell the kids at the start of the year that when October comes...something magical happens...the inside of the book wand turns black in celebration of Halloween. I only mention this at the beginning of the school year...but sure enough...when they come to the library and see the black book wand, they remember the story. I have to secretly change out the wands on the afternoon of the last September schoolday. I'd like to see if there are any other "wands" out there maybe with different colors that maybe I could use at different times of the year (green at St. Patrick's Day, etc.). I don't have a clue what these were originally called. I've tried Googling "pointers," "clear wands," etc. and have pulled up things I hadn't wanted! Anyone have any idea how I might go about searching for these? I'm thinking they were probably originally called a pointer...but no hits on images when trying to find them.
