Barbara Combes suggested making hanging 3D signs to indicate the different
subject areas. Building on this idea, I some photos of signs I had in my
library when I was there. I sourced the lightweight toys from El Cheapos
and used fishing line to string them together. I had them for all the key
subjects, particularly those that the very young kids liked to borrow. It
certainly helped them become independent in finding books for themselves.

Can't send them to the list but if you are interested, let me know and I
will send them. Or work your way through a slideshow presentation I shared
at a conference ...
http://www.slideshare.net/barbara288/landscape-your-library There are all
sorts of ideas there, mostly from my library but some others as well.

It also explains why a stimulating library environment is so important.
