I have heard it used to refer to classics (at the secondary level).
However, at the elementary level it is often used to refer to literature
that is passed down from generation to generation. Examples would
include: folktales, tall tales, fairy tales and fables. Here is a
web-site that has signs that many elementary teachers use to describe
the various genres:

http://hill.troy.k12.mi.us/staff/bnewingham/myweb3/Genres.htm

You will see the traditional genre listed with a brief definition. I
hope this helps!
