Sounds strange... But years ago I purchased these pointers/wands at the Georgia Children's Lit. Conference in Athens, GA. These are clear, approx. a foot long, hollow inside and filled with "stuff." One of them has these small red beads and small shapes...maybe stars, circles, etc...all very small. The other one has small black beads and small stars and moons. I have used these over ten years with Pre and K classes as "book wands." They give me the power to select students who have been sitting quietly and listening to get up when I tap them and select a book. Most of the year I use the one with the small red beads, but I tell the kids at the start of the year that when October comes...something magical happens...the inside of the book wand turns black in celebration of Halloween. I only mention this at the beginning of the school year...but sure enough...when they come to the library and see the black book wand, they remember the story. I have to secretly change out the wands on the afternoon of the last September schoolday. I'd like to see if there are any other "wands" out there maybe with different colors that maybe I could use at different times of the year (green at St. Patrick's Day, etc.). I don't have a clue what these were originally called. I've tried Googling "pointers," "clear wands," etc. and have pulled up things I hadn't wanted! Anyone have any idea how I might go about searching for these? I'm thinking they were probably originally called a pointer...but no hits on images when trying to find them. I just learned that due to new student accounting software we are having difficulty pulling class email addresses, so I just may be doing paper pencil again this year! However, below are the responses that I received. If and when I switch to online, I'll be using Sign-up Genius as it seems to fit my scheduling needs the best! Responses: * Sign-up Genius: http://www.signupgenius.com/ <http://www.signupgenius.com/> * I would do a spreadsheet in Google Apps * It sounds to me like you could create a free Google calendar, give read and write access to all your volunteers, and do it that way. They could simply input their names for the day and hours they want to volunteer. If something comes up and they have to cancel, they just go to the calendar and delete their entry. Very easy to do and costs nothing! * I used an online Volunteer format for the first time last spring for my Book Fair. I was very pleased with how easy it was to use for both me and the volunteers. No cost to schools and volunteer organizations. Ability to send email messages. Reminders automatically sent to the volunteers. My volunteers told me how much they liked it, too, rather than signing up on a form and waiting to get a confirmation note or phone call. I would highly recommend it. http://www.volunteerspot.com/ <http://www.volunteerspot.com/> * I am going to set up some Google calendars - lots in my district use them and say they are easy and efficient! * You could try Doodlepoll. (http://www.doodle.com) It's very easy to set up dates/times and then people can check off the times they want to come in. Users (volunteers) do NOT have to register. Only the person who sets up the schedule needs a Doodle Account. I use it in teaching and in a community organization. A while ago Wall St. Journal had an article (Online Help for Parents Who Volunteer) on apps to help people who work with Volunteers. The article suggested Doodle, which I mentioned above, VolunteerSpot and Yahoo Groups. I have a friend who would like to know if anyone has ready made lessons to use with a StarBoard interactive white board? She is librarian in an elementary school. 2. I am somewhat confused myself, are the lessons interchangeable with different brands of white boards? I have several whiteboard tablets in my building that we are not fully using because we really don't know how to use them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It is published twice yearly, in January and July and is available online and through select periodical databases. School Libraries Worldwide publishes new works of current research and scholarship in school librarianship. Each issue contains exceptional papers relating to the issue theme and a selection of papers representing outstanding research on any aspect of school librarianship. All papers are double-blind peer reviewed and adhere to the highest editorial standards. This issue of School Libraries Worldwide will explore the theme School Libraries as Place, School Libraries as Space. Yi-Fu Tuan wrote in Space and place: The perspective of experience (2001), "the former [place] provides the fixity necessary for security and the latter [space] the opportunity for movement and exploration." This definition is our point of departure, not our fixed interpretation. We encourage papers that both affirm and challenge definitions of space and place. This issue will expand the opportunities for researchers to share their work relating to space and place in school libraries and their physical, virtual, philosophical, and social presences. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: · School libraries as places and spaces for knowledge sharing and learning in virtual and physical settings; · School libraries as meeting places fostering community; · Changing role of school libraries throughout history; · School library architecture and school library layout refurbishment; · School libraries as third places between classroom and home, home and public library, etc.; · School libraries as meeting places across cultural, social, professional and ethnic boundaries; · The interplay between school libraries and digital libraries or virtual learning environments. School library researchers are invited to submit papers reporting their own original research that has not been published elsewhere. Authors who wish to know more about the issue theme should contact the editors to discuss possibilities. School Libraries Worldwide also welcomes submissions of excellent research on any topic relating to school librarianship for the open portion of the journal. Deadline for submissions of full papers: September 15, 2010. Authors interested in contributing to this issue should contact the editors, Marcia Mardis and Nancy Everhart at slw@cci.fsu.edu.
