This student is on a Kinder, maybe 1st grade, reading level. He wants
to read what he thinks other teens are reading, and he won't touch
anything that looks baby-ish.

What kinds of text is there that is extremely low but age-appropriate?

I'm thinking magazines - at least something with engaging photos even
if he can't fully read it.

Books would be awesome, too.

Let me know if you know of any publishers, also, that specialize in
this. I've heard of hi-lo. I think I need something even lower than the
typical hi-lo, though.

Specific recommendations on titles are very welcome, also.

I should have asked his teacher for his reading level before sending a
request. Sorry!

Thanks!

Carol,

How about graphic novels? Stone Arch makes lots of fiction and
non-fiction
in graphic novel format. Other graphic novel titles he might like are
Magic
Pickle, Avatar, etc. Can he read at all? I have moderately
cognitively
impaired students in my program, and many of them have Down Syndrome.
Most
cannot read, but they LOVE media tie-ins on the computers, so I assume
any
current movie tie-ins would be appealing to him.

I have an 8th grade student with Down's Syndrome - pretty
high-functioning - who loves the games Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

Do you have any suggestions for books he might enjoy?
