RE: Elem: Leveled Library A Bit Miffed

Ah, library rebels. We need shirts! Actually, one of the tenets of the
AR program is Read To (along with Read With and Read Independently). At
least it was when I was still doing elementary and AR. My most cherished
memories of reading as a child include my mother reading me bedtime
stories. In the first grade, she read me The Adventures of Tom Sawyer..a
chapter per night.

Subject: Rocky Mountain Special Library Association Scholarship
Opportunity Deadline

*Scholarship Money available!*

*Last chance to apply for the 2010 Rocky Mountain Chapter SLA Rebecca
Jackson Memorial Scholarship!*

* *

*Deadline is October 4, 2010!*

It’s simple. YOU could be the winner of the 2010 Rebecca Jackson
Memorial
Scholarship! Each year, the Rocky Mountain Chapter of SLA awards a
scholarship to a library school student currently enrolled in a
graduate
degree program in Library/Information Science. Eligible candidates are
required to be living in the Chapter region (Colorado, Utah, Wyoming,
or
South Dakota) and/or be enrolled in a graduate library school program
in the
Chapter region or abroad (distance program.)

The amount awarded depends on the funds raised through donations and
our
scholarship fundraising event(s) held each year. To find out more about
the
events, go to the RMSLA website at:
http://units.sla.org/chapter/crmt/index.asp

You may also make a contribution at any time to the scholarship fund
by
contacting the RMSLA Treasurer, Laura Cullerton at
lcullerton@plattcolorado.edu

Of course, you cannot be awarded the scholarship unless you fill out
the
simple application first. A PDF application can be found on the RMSLA
website at http://units.sla.org/chapter/crmt/index.asp Click on the
Rebecca
Jackson Memorial Scholarship “PDF” link! It’s easy!

Or you can contact Michelle Rainbolt, the RMSLA Academic Relations
Chair and
she will provide a copy upon request. However, to be considered for a
scholarship award, your application must be postmarked/emailed/faxed
by
midnight on *October 4, 2010*.

Don't delay -- Apply Now!

Good Luck!

Michelle Rainbolt 303-795-7151 or mrainbolt@gmail.com

*Application guidelines and process:*

* *

   - Applicants must be residents (and living) in Colorado, Utah,
Wyoming or
   South Dakota.

   - Applicants must be currently enrolled in an initial graduate
degree

program in library and information science, whether in the Chapter
region or
via a distance graduate program. (The scholarship is not awarded to
PhD
candidates or for continuing education/certificate programs.)

   - Part-time and/or online students are eligible as well as
full-time
   students.

   - Applicants must be SLA members. If the person is not an SLA member
upon
application, they should be by award time. Belonging to a related
special
libraries organization such as CCML or CoALL is a plus.

   - Eligible candidates need to have completed classes so that they
have an
academic track record and a school reference. If they are accepted
to a
program, but have not completed any coursework prior to the
application
deadline, we recommend that they apply the following year.

   - The person needs to display financial need. If financial need is
not
described or documented, the candidate may be contacted for
additional
information during a tight decision. If an individual has
financial
need, but is receiving a form of financial aid or other
scholarships, then
it is considered when evaluating their financial need.

   - The candidate needs to articulate an interest in special
libraries. Work
background is considered in evaluating their interest.

   - Involvement in the Rocky Mountain Chapter is a plus.

Other criteria we consider:

We would like the award to go to someone who is committed to staying in
the
region, if possible. Indications are that they have a home or family
and an
employment history in the area, and are not just residing there for a
year
or two while in school.

Ah, Barb, you radical! I cringe when I get "But, You're just reading to
them!" So many of our kids could benefit from someone reading to them.
It amazes me that something so simple totally gets missed by so many
parents. I use my read alouds to challenge kids to try something
different. A different genre, author, style of writing. One never knows
what great book one may be missing until it is tried!

"In several research studies children reported that
finding books they like is the biggest barrier they face to reading"
and
"Children rarely acknowledged receiving formal instruction in book
selection."

So my question is, "How do they find books they want to read in the
wider
world of unlevelled collections, five-finger-tests and so on?" Are we
doing
them a disservice by propping them up with arbitrary crutches?

This is a leap for me, the assumption is these kids can read and want
to.
In my school we are still delving into children that are getting their

wings. I discuss book selection, reading the inserts, backs of books,
checking the online synopsis, thinking about the things that interest
them, etc etc. The book levels (all book are dewey arranged) are props,

absolutely. Except I see them more as props to get them started to fly

with books. Most of my kids would not read unless it is required. Let
me
repeat it that these children are not readers, selecting books for them
is
like going to the dentist. Every prop and tool I can use, book talks,
authors videos, themes, challanges to get books into the kids hands I
will
use. I buy Captain Underpants and Franny K. Stein because it may be the

only thing Bobby or Susie will read without a battle. Especially if
they
know the teachers don't like them. If Bobby wants to read fairy stories
I
will sneak him copies when no one is around. Any prop I can use to help
my
kids start reading....I'll take it.

This discussion has come at a fortunate time because I am writing an
assignment for my third masters and have been researching relevant
resources. Here is another one that looks at children's book selection

strategies.

Reuter, K.A. (2007) Children selecting books in a library: Extending
models
of information behavior to a recreational setting. (Doctoral
dissertation,
University of Maryland) Retrieved from http://hdl.handle.net/1903/7021

Her literature review is on p11. In it , the author says "Although
these
studies looked at the selection of leisure-reading materials, they
tended
to
highlight the classroom context of reading by associating selection
strategies with reading ability and achievement levels. In fact, all
these
studies were conducted in schools." Her research goes beyond that.

It is worth reading because in her abstract (which is what caught my
attention) she says "In several research studies children reported that

finding books they like is the biggest barrier they face to reading"
and
"Children rarely acknowledged receiving formal instruction in book
selection."

So my question is, "How do they find books they want to read in the
wider
world of unlevelled collections, five-finger-tests and so on?" Are we
doing
them a disservice by propping them up with arbitrary crutches?

This discussion is not about the use of AR within the school - it
started
because someone asked for the pros and cons of levelling a school
library,
regardless of the tool used for that levelling.

From: Sara Reinders <sreinders@ADACHRISTIAN.ORG>
Subject: HIT: Browser vent

Thanks for the sympathy and suggestions for my vent on browsers, tabs,
and
all software programs becoming Web based. Here are the suggestions I
received:

1. Use multiple browsers and assign them to different tasks (FireFox
for
Destiny, Explorer for mail/calendar, GoogleChrome for everything
else.)
I'll probably start with this idea.
2. Use Google Chrome; it has some helpful features that will help me
stay
organized (I haven't downloaded it yet, but am curious.)
3. Open only one Explorer window, and use tabs for everything.
Right-clicking on links activates them in new tabs, not new windows,
and
ctrl/tab moves between tabs.
4. There's an add-on in FireFox that makes every tab a different
color.
There's another feature that saves all bookmarks as small thumbnails.

It's a little alarming to me to find out how much my work habits are
tied
into the conventions and language of particular computer interfaces.
Am I
thinking like a computer? Turning into a robot? I didn't realize it
until
the rules changed.

I tried to thank everyone personally; please accept my apologies if I
missed
you. Another thing I'm still learning is how to manage "conversations"
in
Google Mail. A year ago I would have had 20 distinct replies in my
inbox,
each one clearly marked "You replied to this message on Tuesday
afternoon."
But now they're all stuck together in a 21-message "conversation,"
arranged
in strictly chronological order, and because my replies sink to the
bottom
of the conversation rather than nesting under people's original
messages to
me, it's hard to tell who's been thanked and who hasn't. Yet another
learning curve ... I'll get there ...

Here is an email I received from our ESE teacher. Her students are
very needy. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My full time ESE group is completing a unit on equality and slavery
during civil war times.

I wanted to show a movie on Friday that possibly ties or has some
relevance to the topic. It needs to be on a low enough cognitive level
to hold their attention and comprehension.

I have not been able to think of anything along those lines. do you
have any ideas or suggestions?

i thought of Davy Crockett but that is earlier in history.
