I couldn't find the information I was looking for in the archives, so I'm asking for your help here. Somewhere I read that the reading level of most popular books is 4th to 5th grade levels (AR), even those written for adults. Did I dream this up? And if not, where can I find this little gem of information? My 6th-8th grade English teachers have told their students they have to read books at their grade level, but most of the books on the shelves that they'd WANT to read are on the 5th reading level. If I could find some research, it might encourage the teachers to allow the kids more freedom to read what interests them.
