Some of you wrote to me a few weeks ago when I
wrote to say that Bruchac was going to bring the
book back into print, and, I promised to let you
know when that was going to happen.
Joseph Bruchac wrote to me today to say that he
will not be publishing HIDDEN ROOTS. The plans
fell through because Scholastic will not give him rights to it.
I'm really disappointed. I looked over
Scholastic's offerings (on their website) of
books about American Indians, and am doubly
disappointed. I've blogged about this here:

I think HIDDEN ROOTS is a very important book.
Far too few people know that there were
government-funded initiatives to sterilize Native
men and women. That's what HIDDEN ROOTS is about,
and Bruchac tells that story in an elegant, yet
honest way. There's no overly-dramatic tone in
the book, no appeal to entertain readers with garish or purple prose.
