LM_NETTERS: An observation I have made from talking with media specialists here and there and hearing my students talk in classes has been that male media specialists are more likely to have clerical help -- aids or paraprofessionals, or whatever they are called locally -- than female media specialists. Am I off the wall or is my observation accurate? (Maybe it is just number of students, number of schools served, or number of professionals). Let's do a quick and dirty survey here. Send your responses to me and I will summarize and post to the whole list. fmcdonald@vax1.mankato.msus.edu My questions are: 1) I am a ______Male _______Female Media specialist 2) In my school(s), I have: a. Clerical assistant(s) ______Number b. Aide(s) _______Number c. Paraprofessional(s) ________Number d. Technology assistants (not other professionals) _____Number e. Other paid help ________Number 3) Students in my school ______Number 4) Professional staff in my school media center ______Number 5) I work in more than one school. How many? ______Number 6) Other, or clarification: While I am at it I will be collecting information about what we call these people who help us keep things running. Thanks. Hope this is not too sexist a thought. Fran McDonald, Professor Mankato State University, Minnesota fmcdonald@vax1.mankato.msus.edu
