Hello LM_Netters,

    When I offered a free copy of World Link for the cost of a SASE, I had a
nice response. I also received suggestions to post an electronic edition. To
do this basically meant creating two different copies, since I publish it using
Pagemaker and include some graphics. The audience is the Central Ohio area
with the bulk going to Library Media Specialists and Administrators in the
Columbus Public Schools. The cost of publication is funded by a grant from the
Martha Holden Jennings Foundation of Cleveland, Ohio.
     I thought I would post World Link one time and see what response I get
back via e-mail. This issue begins the second year of publication. Please
forgive the consumption of bandwidth.

TOP PICKS ON INTERNET BOOKS

   I picked up a copy of The Internet Complete Reference by Harley Hahn & Rick
Stout published by Osborne McGraw-Hill.$29.95
   The topics are very well organized with a Table of Contents and index. The
explanations on Internet terms are concise with clear examples. There is a
section titled Catalog of Internet Resources which is very useful, but
certainly not a definitive guide. The page layout is superb. The fonts used are
very readable. The book is loaded with hints and tips while remaining
unobtrusive to the main text. Topics include understanding the internet,
connecting to the internet, e-mail, ftp, gopher, finger, veronica, jughead,
wais, mailing lists, relay chat, talk, internet service providers, and more.
   There were only a few books a year ago about the Internet. Now, the computer
 stores are loaded with titles. My top picks are:

1.The Internet Complete Reference - Hahn & Stout
2.The Whole Internet User's Guide & Catalog - Krol
3.Zen and the Art of the Internet - Kehoe
4.Internet Companion - LaQuey
5.NetPower Resource Guide to Online Computer Services - Persson

CENTRAL OHIO INTERNET LINK BEGINS OPERATION

WHAT IS CENTRAL OHIO INTERNET LINK?
===================================

     Central Ohio Internet Link is a commercial public access Unix
and Internet service, the first (and currently only) such service to
be offered in the Columbus, Ohio metropolitan area. COIL offers its
customers a range of data communications and computing services, from
low cost Internet electronic mailboxes to fully interactive Internet
access including telnet, ftp, irc, and USENET news.

     For users desiring interactive access to a UNIX system on the
Internet, we offer telnet (and several telnet clients, including the
ever-popular TinyFugue), ftp (Internet file transfer), and worldwide
Internet Relay Chat. Interactive users also have their choice of Unix
shell, including sh, csh, tcsh, bash, ksh, zsh, rc, and es. For
those who want nothing to do with Unix, we offer an easy to use
menu system.

COIL HARDWARE
=============

     COIL currently resides on a Sun SPARCstation 2 running SunOS
4.1.2. We are starting with ten dial-in lines, six at 2400 baud and
four at 14.4 kilobaud. We will be adding new lines and modems on a
regular basis. Our connection to the Internet is through a 56k
digital line to UUnet, managed by MorningStar's revolutionary
SnapLink router.

WHAT KIND OF SERVICES CAN I EXPECT IN THE FUTURE?
=================================================

     The Central Ohio Internet Link staff is dedicated to bringing
you the highest quality service at the lowest possible price. We
will continue to expand and upgrade our services, including greater
bandwidth, more software, regular upgrades of existing software,
more dial-in lines, and hardware upgrades. Eventually we hope to
purchase a second SPARC 2 or a SPARC 10, and upgrade our current
56k digital line to a T1.

     We also hope to offer SLIP or PPP services, UUCP feeds, and
other networking services in the Columbus area. If there's something
you want that we don't have, we will do our best to make it available
to you.

COIL INTERACTIVE INTERNET AND UNIX SERVICES
===========================================

Subscription rate:  $20.00 per month
Start up fee: $10.00 (once only)
(Ohio residents will be billed for 5.75% sales tax)

     COIL's full access Unix and Internet account offers users access
to USENET news and Internet mail, plus a Unix shell of their choice
(sh, csh, tcsh, bash, ksh, zsh, rc, or es) or a simple menu system,
and interactive access to the Internet through telnet, ftp, and
other programs. Each user is given a 1 MB soft/2 MB hard storage
quota ("soft" quotas can be exceeded temporarily, "hard" quotas
cannot).

INTERNET ELECTRONIC MAIL SERVICE
================================

Subscription rate:  $5.00 per month
Start up fee: $5.00 (once only)
(Ohio residents will be billed for 5.75% sales tax)

     For users who just want a mailbox on the Internet, this service
provides an electronic mail account using the PINE mail program. Users
may keep mail in folders in their home directories, but they are limited
to 250 KB soft/500 KB hard quotas ("soft" quotas can be exceeded
temporarily, hard quotas cannot). Users can send mail to any email
address on the Internet, including CompuServe and America On-Line
addresses. There is no per message fee, but mass distributions of "junk"
mail are not permitted.

HOW CAN I REACH COIL?
