SEC: Romeo and Juliet: alternate scenarios

An English teacher is having his students research "alternate scenarios"
for Romeo and Juliet; what are the places where a situation such as Romeo
and Juliet could take place, that is where there is a conflict between two
cultures which would cause problems for "young lovers" from the two
cultures.  He has come up with a few places, including Ireland (Catholics
Protestants), Middle East (Jews and Arabs).  Can you suggest other places?
(Perhaps even conflicts which do not exist now but existed in the past).
