I have been watching this discussion with much interest, and I began to question our long standing policy of one book for k-2, two books for 3-4 and three books for 5-6. I Talked with my assistant about this and asked her if our school ever tried unlimited check-out (She has been here for 27 years) She told me that they did try it, and found that younger students had a problem remembering what books they had borrowed. We talked about our "restrictions" and realized that we aren't really restricting them at all. Students can return books anytime they want and get new ones. Why allow students to check out more books than they can possibly read during the week ? If they do finish a book before it's due, they can return it and get another. They can check-out as many books as they can read.
