Wow - within minutes, I had several replies saying it was from a song, "Is you is or is you ain't my baby?" The prize, however, goes to Sarah Gidding's husband, who sent this: My husband remembered the title immediately and says it's "Is you is or is you ain't" and it's from a popular song of 1944, called "Is you is or is you ain't my baby" words and music by Billy Austin and Louis Jordan. It was in the film Follow the Boys, performed by Louis Jordan and his Tympani Five. His source for this information is: Who wrote that song? by Dick Jacobs (Betterway Publications, 1988). Pretty good reference work for a Saturday night, I'd say. Thanks, all!!
