There are standards for metadata and metatags. The Dublin Core metadata
standard is a set of fifteen elements used to describe a wide range of
networked resources. The semantics of these fifteen elements have been
established through consensus by an international, cross-disciplinary group
of professionals from the library, museum, computer science, and text
encoding communities.

One source for details about this is the Colorado Digitization Project. This
site also contains standards for digitizing information from primary sources
(scanning issues, policy questions, etc).

Subject: meta tags

Had an interesting conversation on the train the other day about our
profession and technology. Somehow it led to cataloging and then meta
tags in web sites. The gentleman was asking me if there were any rules
to developing the words and phrases used in meta tags similiar to LC or
Sears subject headings. I didn't think so but I thought I'd ask. It is
a business site and he wants optimum hits with search engines so I did
suggest using subject headings along with Broader, Narrower, and Related
terms and anything suggested as a see also. Any insight?
