Dear Almost Best Friends and Colleagues,

I have to say that I have the privilege to work at an all boys' private
school. I see the boys grow from about 10 years to 18.

The ones who begin reading ANYTHING like Garfield, FarSide, Choose Your Own
Aventures (CYOA to us) or Animorphs do not develop gelatin for brains. As
seniors they CAN AND DO for the most part read ANYTHING they want -- great
literary classics, moldy (to me) Latin authors, EVEN dare I say it? -- THE
GREAT BOOKS OF THE WESTERN WORLD! One senior last year who reads everything
Sci-Fi (at which some TYPES look askance), also read Summa Theologica-St.
Thomas Aquinas! How can I NOT offer "dips and chips" to my young readers
when they advance naturally to greater and greater feasts. (I've had to
lobby at our school to keep Garfield.)

Easy paperbacks, comic series and other FUN, escape-type reading is FINE at
our school. It's developmental.

Adults read all sorts/levels of things, and so CAN young people.
