Have you considered starting up the William Floyd High School Readers
Awards?
Students read then write reviews and these are published on the school's
website with voting happening near the end of your school year. You can
devise as many categories as you like and maybe invite authors to a huge
presentation ceremony. At the very least, students could design
certificates to be sent to them. You can find a model for this at
http://www.teachers.ash.org.au/ozreading/yara
Although we have established this as a national Award it could be easily
adapted and kids LOVE to see their name on the web. Regular contributors
might earn the privilege of reading and reviewing the newest purchases
first! Not-so-keen readers might like to create the pages and as they read
the reviews, might be inspired to pick up a title or two.
I have schools lined up to receive the books and students beg to be
involved. It makes me smile when I upload reviews from the local high
school and recognise the names of students who wouldn't read to save
themselves here at primary!
