The terror of the situation of September 11 is only the tip of the iceberg. In the coming days, responses of the U.S. and it's military/diplomatic response to terrorism will be a classic teaching tool. Foreign entanglements, or the lack of them, will determine how the world views our response. Already lawmakers are using phrases like "an act of war", a "modern Pearl Harbor." One commentator said that "Pearl Harbor came with a return address." The possibilities are endless. History has never been linear, it only seems that way when one draws a line from war to war. History is determined by personalities and events in an ever changing array of possibilities. The combination of national politics, global economics, national interests and global interests, including the alignment of countries will help determine the course of the Bush administration. Today, September 11 has reverberated into the countryside. By 2:00 gas stations in southeast Kansas raised gas prices to $3.00 a gallon. Cars were lined up for blocks at stations still showing the $1.69 price of yesterday. In the past century we've had the "war to end all wars" (1914-1918); the "just war" (1939-1945); the "war of containment" (1950-1953); the "stop the domino effect war" (1963 - 1972) and a "protect the national interest" war of desert storm. Have the players and personalities and events materialized to change the course of history? Civics and Government classes should have a serious discussion, guessing the course of history.
