Dear colleagues- On August 27th I posted a request for suggested titles to share with a 4/5 teacher. She had asked me specifically for picture books related to the themes of peace, conflict resolution, compassion, cooperation, tolerance, anti-bias, etc. I have been remiss in compiling and posting a hit. In light of today's horrible, tragic events, I felt compelled to put that hit together and send it out to all of you tonight. I hope you find it of use. My thanks to the many people who sent their book titles and other resource suggestions. I apologize if I neglected to include anyone's ideas. This my first attempt at posting a lengthy hit, so please gently let me know if I need to re-post in more manageable chunks. Sincerely, Tina Jensen Media Specialist Early Childhood Center (gr PreK & K) East Union Elementary (gr 1-5) Chaska MN cmsolbe2@ties.k12.mn.us *********************************************************** * The Big Book of Peace -- published by Dutton. It is a collection of "peace" * themed stories from noted authors. * Scholes, Katherine, Peace begins with you. Illus by Robert Ingpen. * Galicich, Anne, Samantha Smith: A journey for peace. * Gikow, Louise, For every child, a better world. * JT author Ellen Weiss; illus by Bruce McNally. * Small, David, Ruby Mae has something to say. * Kellogg, Steven, The Island of the Skog. * Old Henry by Blos is a super story of neighborliness and getting along. * The Very Persistent Gappers of Frip * Thank You Mr. Falker by Polacco (different learning abilities) * Yoko by Rosemary Wells (cultural differences) * Hooway For Wodney Wat (disabilities) * Horton Hears A Who (all are special no matter how small) * Amazing Grace by Hoffman & Binch (gender & race) * The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman (class / economic) * Two monsters by David McKee * War game by Michael Foreman- about the first Christmas in World War 1 (1914), when British and German soldiers observed a ceasefire and played football together * Hiroshima No Pika by Toshi Maruki. Lothrop, 1980. * The watercolor illustrations are quite graphic and include nudity, but they tell a very real and horrible story from the point of view of the victims. Could be very effectively used with 5th grade if teacher-directed. I don't think I would want 5th graders just reading it on their own. The author wrote the book for children (see her note at the back of the book). * Peace Begins with You by Katherine Scholes, Sierra Club Books, 1993 * Eve Bunting's The Wall * Terrible Things by Eve Bunting * David Adler- Anne Frank: A Picture Book of Anne Frank * Number the Stars by Lowry * The Butterfly by Patricia Polacco * The Little Riders by Margarita Shemin * Daniel's Story by Carol Matas * Jacob's Rescue by Malka Drucker * When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr * Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen * Child of the Warsaw Ghetto - Adler - picture book, could be used with grades 2/3 - 6 * Darkness over Denmark, the Danish resistance and the rescue of the Jews - Levine (grades 5-6 and up) * A Place to Hide, true stories of Holocaust rescues - Pettit * The Holocaust Heroes - Fremon (grades 4-6 and up) * Parallel Journeys - GREAT for seeing both sides of the Holcaust (for grades 5-6 and up) * Anne Frank, Beyond the Diary : A photographic remembrance - Van der Rol * Anne Frank - Tames (with lots of photos, maps, diagrams of the secret annex, etc.) (Maybe for as young as 3rd grade and up) * Bishop Twenty and Ten * Laird Shadow of the Wall * Matas Daniel's Story * Morpurgo Waiting for Anya * Nolan If I Should Die Before I Wake * Orgel The Devil in Vienna * Orlev The Island on Bird Street * Ossowski Star Without a Sky * Schnur The Shadow Children * Van Stockum The Borrowed House * Vos Dancing on the Bridge of Avignon * Hide and Seek * I Never Saw Another Butterfly (book of poetry) * The Upstairs Room * The Diary of Ann Frank * The Lady With the Hat * The Number on My Grandfather's Arm * The Lily Cupboard by Levey Oppenheim * Best Friend by Elisabeth Reuter * The Tattooed Torah by Marvell Ginsburg * We're Different, We're the Same, by B.J.Kates. * Eleanor Coers; Sadako and the thousand paper cranes * Number on my grandfather's arm by Adler Web Sites containing useful book lists: * The Children's Picturebook Database at the University of Miami at Ohio. It can be searched by alphabetical keywords and provides annotations for relevant picturebooks. (try "peace", "conflict resolution," "cooperation," etc.)I recommend bookmarking it! <http://www.lib.muohio.edu/pictbks/> * United States Holocaust Memorial Museum <http://www.ushmm.org/> * Cybrary of the Holocaust <http://www.remember.org> * Holocaust Teacher Resource Center <http://www.holocaust-trc.org> * Holocaust Education For Children <http://www.mindspring.com/~cleanccl/index.html> * I recommend looking at the Nancy Keane website. It is <www.nancykeane.com >Check under ATN lists and choose values, then conflict and a list of books dealing with conflicts and resolution may give you what you need. This site has loads of valuable theme suggestions, booktalks, reviews, etc. One of my favorites when a teacher poses a question such as "What books could I us to teach...?" and I am in the midst of a face to face instruction with 30 students. Other suggested resources: * The Florida Holocaust Museum has a program called traveling trunks which include grade appropriate materials for use on the holocaust and related themes. I have currently borrowed the 1st and 2nd grade trunk which includes the videos Different and the Same with pictures book that go with each of the 10 videos. It also includes the teacher training manual. Here in Fl you can borrow the trunks for up to 6 weeks and the only cost is the shipping. Maybe they would lend to another state or maybe a museum near you has the same program. I have not looked at the individual materials in each trunk but the 1st-2nd is fantastic! The museum has a web site <www.flholocaustmuseum.org>. They might be willing to send you a list of the contents of the other trunks. They go through 12th grade. · =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
