When I read through the list of books that had not been returned in a third
grade class, one of the boys who is known for being active told me that his
mother had taken the book "101 Ways to Bug Your Parents" from him because
she was tired of his bugging her. He had gone to the list of the ways to
bug parents in the back and was trying out every one. Knowing the boy and
his mother, I was not surprised. He said the one he liked the most was the
one about selling his little sister.
When I talked with his mother to let him know that we had all had a good
laugh, she told me the real story. He was so interested in the book that
she had caught him reading it with a flashlight under the covers after he
was supposed to be in bed. In a way, I agree with the mother, but in
another way, I am glad that he enjoyed the book so much that he couldn't put
it down. This was a student who was a reluctant reader a year ago.
