OK, I have to add my pet peeve to this discussion. I just hate the way the tv newscasters mix the tenses of their stories in an attempt to make the news more "immediate." For example, "This morning a man walks into a convenience store and shoots the clerk. More at 10:00." I makes me nuts. Just speaking in the present tense doesn't make the story more immediate. In my mind it just makes them sound ignorant. You'll laugh at this, but I called the news director to complain. No wonder our students have trouble with grammar!
