Just saw Peter's deadline. I'm slipping in under the wire. We all have one (at least), don't we? With an English teacher for a mother, I heard about my mistakes and her pet peeves from about day one. One that drives me nuts (and I can't figure out how it might have gotten started) is the use of quotes for any kind of emphasis, as in My "favorite" grammar misuse is Come have Sunday "brunch" at the Hotel Hadley We've made a game of "collecting" these. These are turning up in LM_NET posts, so I'm realizing this is becoming accepted, but what is the meaning? Under what circumstances do you use quotes like this?? I see the misuse of the apostrophe a lot, especially in our school lunch menu. -- Johanna Halbeisen, Library Media Teacher Woodland Elementary School (preK-4) 80 Powder Mill Rd, Southwick, MA 01077 johanna.newsong@rcn.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
