Regarding the use of "their" or "they" inplace of he/she or "him/her": the National Council of the Teachers' of English long ago sanctioned the use of these alternatives. Scientific research has proved that the use of "he" or 'him" when addressing girls or women has a detrimental affect on their learning or self esteem. Language or grammar that is not gender neutral should no longer be used....ESPECIALLY in education. We ARE the role models and teachers of the future leaders. I have always mused how interesting it would be to start using "she" or "her" in all situations. I can image the outcry of the boys and men.
