Peanut allergies are definitely a serious problem. Our classrooms have a NO PEANUTS sign outside of the classrooms of affected students. Class parents are also advised as children often bring in treats for birthdays and holidays. I think some people are skeptical about the need for these precautions because the use of epi pens and school warnings is a new thing. I've been teaching since the late 60s and only became aware of these allergies in the last few years. Re: epi pens We have several kids who carry them in our school. Parents provide them and they are stored in the Nurse's office. The kids pick them up each morning, take them to lunch and specials and several staff members are trained to administer the shot. Kids also have them for bee stings and other allergic reactions.
