I have run into problems with Infocentre and multiple barcode symbologies.
We have been automated for approximately 18 years, beginning with Follett
Circ Plus and then converting to Athena in 1999. We have at least 3
different kinds of barcodes both with and without leading zeros which
Athena stripped with the use of a "strip leading zeros" program. As a
result, the multiple symbologies have never been a problem with Athena.
However, in converting to Infocentre they have become a huge problem and
so far the only solution Sagebrush tech support can recommend is to check
every barcode with one or two leading zeros to see how it is being read by
the scanner and re-barcode those that pose a problem. At first glance this
appears to be anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 of my collection of 13,000!!!!
Needless to say, this is not an appealing option. I think that this is a
problem that should have been addressed at the software development level
but I am told that is not possible. I will add that Sagebrush tech support
has been wonderful and I have spent many hours on the phone over the last
two weeks trying to deal with this issue.
Has anyone else had this problem with Infocentre or some other
circulation program and how was it dealt with? I'd like to hope that we
are not the only libraries to have this problem. Or, is this a problem
that is evident in other circ programs as well and we will therefore just
have to bite the bullet and fix our barcodes and records????? Thanks for
your collective wisdom.
