Thanks to everyone who sent information regarding the databases that contain controversial materials. I was specificially searching for subscription databases but many sent additional links to sites that contained resources that were on the web, so I've included those also. While most databases could easily be used to compile resources on various topics, I was specifically searching for the "speciality databases" that have already compiled resources for students to access. So, if you don't see your favorite "controversial topics database" listed here, let me know and I'll try to add it to the mix. I'll also post all of this information to my wiki(s) for future reference, if you (or I ) need it throughout the year. (See links below for the wiki sites.) The subscription databases that contain controversial topics that many of you are subscribing to are: Gale: Opposing Viewpoints Facts on File: Issues and Controversies ABC-CLIO: Issues--Understanding Controversy and Society EBSCO: Points of View Reference Center Congressional Digest Corp: Pro and Con Congressional Quarterly: CQ Researcher LexisNexis: LexisNexis Academic ProQuest: SIRS (EBSCO recently acquired ABC-CLIO's "Issues--Understanding Controversy and Society" so I didn't mention it with the EBSCO listing). ************************** Websites with controversial topics compiled for research assignments include: The Multnomah County Library website: http://www.multcolib.org/homework/sochc.html Also many colleges and schools have websites dedicated to this topic: http://www.sac.edu/students/library/nealley/websites/controversial.htm http://www.accd.edu/PAC/LRC/issues.htm http://www.twinlakes.k12.in.us/info/library/connection/contro.htm Some Christian websites also have controversial issues sections. http://christiananswers.net/ http://www.christianarsenal.com/ContTopics.htm ******************************* "Dr. Joyce's" (Joyce Valenza--- *grin*) pathfinder: http://www.sdst.org/shs/library/issuespath.html ******************************** Social Issues at the Multonamah County Library Site http://www.multcolib.org/homework/sochc.html and St Ambrose University's Hot Topics/ Best Information on the Web http://library.sau.edu/bestinfo/Hot/hotindex.htm **************************************************** The following are also available online at: http://www.pvc.maricopa.edu/library/databases/pro_con.html American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) - Issues American Prospect: Moving Ideas - Issues dmoz: Open Directory Project - Issues Dushkin Online Google Directory-Society-Issues The Hoover Digest: Research and Opinion on Public Policy Hot Topic Sites for Research Papers - PVCC Internet Public Library - Social Issues Multonah County Library - Social Issues National Issues.com Okeefe Library: Best Information on the Net Public Agenda - The Issues SpeakOut.com - Issues Tacoma Community College-Selected Internet Sites Watching America Yahoo - Issues & Causes Yahoo - Political Issues You Decide - KQED News & Public Affairs - Perspectives & Opinions *************************** Others that I stumbled upon while searching: Pro and Con: http://www.procon.org Debate Database: http://www.idebate.org/debatabase/ University of Alaska Justice Center: http://justice.uaa.alaska.edu/death/procon.html Public Agenda Online: http://www.publicagenda.org/issues/issuehome.cfm Virtual Learning Resource Center: http://www.virtuallrc.com/ Scout Report Archives: http://scout.wisc.edu/Archives/ InfoMine: http://infomine.ucr.edu/ And although Chris Smith (from Shambles) did not send me a link, there may be some resources listed there, so don't forget to check Shambles for additional information (it's also just fun to "get lost" and browse...you always find great info on other topics of interest!) http://www.shambles.net Thanks again! ~Shonda -- Shonda Brisco, MLIS Library Media / Technology Specialist Digital Bookends wiki / blog: http://digitalbookends.pbwiki.com http://shonda.edublogs.org/ sbrisco@gmail.com Resources for Texas School Librarians: http://txschoollibrarians.ning.com/ http://txschoollibrarians.wikispaces.com/ "Digital Resources" columnist School Library Journal -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
