I have been reading blogs this summer trying to catch up on what is happening with technology in education and in libraries. One blog that I have discovered is The Tech Savvy Educator http://www.techsavvyed.net/. [Irritatingly, I cannot access his blog at school, so had to wait until I had time this summer.] Today, I spent about two hours there and found a lot of interesting things to share with my teachers. One of the items I found that I thought might be of interest to you is Quintura Kids http://kids.quintura.com/ and it is the first visual search engine for kids. This is a fantastic replacement for Yahooligans, which fell to the bottom of the pile. Some of the subject headings are words and other are images which you find when you scroll down the page. It is similar to Kartoo, a visual search engine for adults, in that when you choose a subject heading, it floats sub-headings for you to narrow your topic. Unlike Kartoo, it also starts showing the links on the bottom of the same page. If you click on one of the sub-headings and it is one that you don't want included in your search, click on the red X and it will be eliminated from your search. To start a new search you click on Quintura Kids in the upper left-hand corner. BTW there is a beta version of the same search engine for adults, but its scope is nowhere as good as other search engines right now.
