I've received several more great ideas for decorating my Library walls and I wanted
to pass them on. Thank you to everyone that sent me suggestions! Right now, I'm
planning on using at least 2 of the ideas that were sent.

Thank you again for all of your great ideas.

Our art teacher has done a fantastic job painting a mural on one of the walls in my
reading room. The paints were paid for by the school and her time was her own so we
did not pay for anything. It is so colorful. It starts off with a librarian in a
rocking chair reading to kids then there is a doorway of books, then all kinds of
storybook characters are painted on the wall in a cloud like arrangement. and it
ends with a Wonderful Dragon holding a banner that will say Books Fire Me Up!

Sorry this is so late but last year I took pictures of students reading in the
library, had them blown up to 40 x40". They sit against the wall above our higher
shelves.

Sorry I'm late with this. We did a wall in my (former) K-12 library with the
childrens' handprints turned into a rainbow.
For example, the first grade hands are red, the second grade hands are blue, etc.
We also wrote their names on their hands and dated it so that when the first
graders were 6th graders they could compare their hands, etc.

Hi. Why not take a Children's Book Week slogan (and picture, if it's allowed) like
Change your mind (for instance) and have someone paint it on a wall. The
illustration for the slogan I mentioned has someone retrieving books for a girl
(boy) because she (he) wants something different after he climbs a ladder to get
her (him) what she (he) thinks she (he) wants.

If you want an actual wallpaper mural, I used http://www.muralsyourway.com/ at a
previous district and I loved the results. The website has thousands of murals to
choose from and you can customize the size to fit your needs. I had a professional
wallpaper installer hang the mural. She said the paper itself was very high
quality (i.e., thick paper with proper coatings on the front and back). We ordered
a very large, custom-sized mural and put it on a wall of cinderblock (so it was not
hung on a smooth, flat surface). Two and a half years later, it still looks
fabulous. The library itself was very large so the large design was very
eye-catching. Good luck!

Ask your art teacher for some help or the local high school art teacher -
they often have students who need projects or are willing to do it for the
permanence.
We have two huge blank wall areas in our m.s./h.s. library so I chose a theme and
the art teacher purchased paintable panels and connected the sections to make an
attractive mural. Our underwater mural features a hidden treasure
chest of BOOKS among seaweed, starfish, etc. The new mural for the opposite wall
will feature a tropical rainforest in layers, 2 - 3 panels wide. Your students are
probably too young to produce the artwork, but your art teacher, or someone in the
community might enjoy the project. Students, parents, and visitors often comment on
our current mural because it is so colorful and unusual! The supplies for each
mural, including the paint, was around $200 each

I took posters and put them above the book shelves against the walls. The posters
matched what was in that section. So I had a sign language poster in the 400's, car
poster in 600's, cooking poster in the 600's, etc. I had probably close to 200
posters above the shelves.

When we moved into our new building - I had our high school students do
illustrations from children's books on quilt squares. I then paid someone to put
the quilt together. It turned out very nice

We have some beautiful puffy fabric wall hangings - story characters and reading -
from Demco. (We have
them hanging on pushpins).

I'm a quilted, so I have my library decorated with several quilts and wall
hangings. You might have a local quilters group / guild who would donate items for
decoration for extended periods of time (several months, etc.) Just make sure not
to display the items in direct sunlight

Lowe's has these nifty stick on pictures...spongebob...sports...fairytales in their
wall paper section.
