Here is a lesson I tried with my fifth graders and it worked pretty good. We talked about how books are selected and put together a list of suggestions for selecting books for the library. Then I handed out the publishers catalogs and let them select books they would buy. I let them work in groups. We discussed why they chose what they chose and then to finish off I ask them to look at the price and add up how much their selections would cost. It was very revealing for them. Most of them did not have a clue who selects and orders the books and none of them had any idea the criteria for selecting. For me, it gave me a list of what to purchase next year.
