I totally understand your point--however, the reading after TAKS idea is
not mine, it is what our school district says is law. It's been that
way since time began, or at least since TAKS ruled the world.

I am all about reading NOT being a punishment----believe me, I worried
about this in the beginning, too. However, it is what it is, and so far
it hasn't been seen as a punishment by the majority of the kids--they've
been coming in to check out extra books to keep them occupied. Since
they have to read anyway, I figure some of them could work off their
fines. :)

I would hope that this doesn't turn kids off of reading. It worries me
that if you force them to read, it is seen as a punishment. I wouldn't
want kids to think reading=punishment.

I remember reading on this list about "paying" your fines through
reading time. I think it is a great idea, and want to implement it-we
will be taking TAKS tests next week (7th and 8th grades) and all they
can do afterwards is read---my question is this...how much time do you
guys think is reasonable for set amounts of money. In other words, if a
kiddo needs to pay off a $2.00 fine, how much reading do you all think
is reasonable for that?

Thanks,
