Subject: WAY OT: Our recent trip to Obama, Japan

Dear Colleagues,

Reportedly, when Barak Obama visited Japan and presented himself to the
=
immigration officer at the airport, the officer said to him, "I was born
=
in Obama." After reading the recent articles about Obama, Japan, in a =
local English language newspaper, and in the International Herald =
Tribune, concerning the local excitement in some corners of Obama over =
the campaign, we wanted to see for ourselves. =20

The Obama for Obama group is planning to launch their festivities on =
March 5th, to coincide with the primaries on March 4th in the USA. =
[Japan is 15 hours ahead of Central Time.] We loved the people, food and
=
sights of Obama, Japan.

I saw this on Yahoo news this morning, but the link was down by 7:30.
It concerns the controversy regarding what students say about teachers
and administrators on their own websites, blogs and social networking
sites. It's not an easy issue. Nancy Willard's opinion was presented
in the article. The original came from the Christian Science Monitor.

Subject: TAR GR 4-6 Science Fair

Greetings,

It is time for our school to start thinking about the science fair. We
are a grade 4-6 school and we have held a science fair for quite a few
years and I have supported the kids with research help etc. I am
looking for fresh ideas on library involvement and the science fair. I
would like to expand my role and I am looking to hear from others as to
what they have done to compliment the science fair in their schools.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: TAR: ELEM lexile levels and 3rd grade/4th grade

I have been asked to suggest books to my 3rd and 4th graders that are
within
their lexile range. I am ok with some levels but am stumped at what to
suggest for the kids that are in the 800 and 900 range. I used
lexile.comand for most of the books that were in the 800-999 range the
content was not
appropriate. My catalog records do not contain any lexile info or other
reading levels like AR or RC.

Do you have any suggestions of particular books or a different site to
use
to look up levels? I found lexile.com to be cumbersome. For example,
their
list has fiction and non-fiction combined and I am looking for fiction
only.

How do others help students with finding books at their levels? I was
thinking of creating bibliogrpahies by levels and keeping them in a
notebook
at the checkout desk? Is there a better way?

Thanks
Deirdre

Subject: LM:NET: Ref: NYPD uniforms, circa 1849

Dear All- I am trying to do some fact checking on a
book I am reviewing and have hit a wall. ALthough the
book does not specify a city or time period, various
details, including the fact that Barnum's American
Museum on the corner of Broadway is mentioned (
therefore NYC sometime between 1841 and 1865, when the
myseum burned) and that there are pigs roaming the
city ( driven out after the cholera epidemic of 1849,
for which they were largely blamed) give me a fairly
narrow time period of between 1841 and 1949 in NYC-
there is a policeman in one of the illustrations -(the
police force began in 1844, so now the time frame is
narrower) I can tell from photographs that the unifrom
is correct in terms of tunic, badge placement etc.- my
problem is- the uniform has a red tunic with gray
pants, and I can find obviously no color photographs,
or any sites which mention the color of the uniform at
this time. I called the New York City Police Museum-
they said their historian ( who apparently works only
as a volunteer) would call me back- that was last
week. Can anyone refer me to any source that would
tell me what color an NYPD officer's uniform would
have been at that time? TIA, Grace

I am still working on putting together a list of about 16-20 =22meaty=22
novels that feature some form of conflict for a class of gifted readers.
The conflict could be within the character, within relationships or a
conflict between cultures. They will be finishing a unit on Outcasts
and the theme of our conflict unit is =22Hurt People Hurt People=22. I
=
feel
I don=27t quite have the mix I need for this very demanding group.
Could
you lend your expertise? I have listed the novels we have already
chosen, those that we read and decided weren=27t quite right for this
group and some that we are still considering. Are we missing some
really good choices? Tell us what you think. Don=27t be afraid to be
honest....we are really struggling with this list to get the right mix
and could really use your suggestions. We use the Deborah Ellis books,
The Breadwinner etc. at the sixth grade so we can=27t include those
here.

Books we plan to use:

*Barakat, Ibtisam. Tasting the Sky: A Palestinian Childhood=20
