Hello

I want to thank all of you for your suggestions. I was requested to post a
HIT for my request

I wonder if it is necessary to re-invent the wheel here. Is it possible to
request that the kindergarten teachers select one student from each of their
classes to "spotlight" on the school bulletin board. Also, you could request
that the "spotlight student" provide some sort of additional information
("My favorite part" - sort of paragraph or an original illustration of their
favorite part). Also, a photograph of the spotlight students next to their
work- kids and families LOVE to be spotlighted!) This could be a real
opportunity for students who otherwise might not get a lot of positive
recognition at school, too.

The other bulletin board could provide deeper information about the book of
the month. If you can do an AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT~ what else has this author
written or illustrated. Or ILLUSTRATOR SPOTLIGHT, as well. If you can find
information like favorite color, favorite food ~ search websites for
interesting tidbits that the kids might love. Some authors provide some of
this information on the book jacket that often gets overlooked ~ "when I was
seven, I was terrified of large dogs so I wrote this book about. . ."
Laminate book covers by the author and use an overhead and transparencies to
create a large copy of a character on the background (parent volunteers and
older students can assist with this).

What about a play on the ALA READ posters and doing a Reader of the Month
board with pic of student posing with book?

You could have teachers nominate those students who are outstanding or
improved readers and select from those. If you work with multiple teachers,
divide your board and select more than one.

Or you could have kids write a short review of the book and select Readers
from those responses. They might not see it as an "assignment" if they are
writing to become Reader of the Month! You might even be able to get a
parent volunteer to get some small reading related prizes donated, like
paperbacks, book marks, book lights, pencils that say I love reading etc!

One idea that came to mind was ...you can have the students trace their

hand. On the palm write the title and author and on the each of the

fingers have the students write something they liked about the

book...High Five for Frog and Toad

Make a big ice cream cone and have scoops of ice cream for the students

to write down something about the book...like favorite character, best

part of the story..etc...and put the scoops on the ice cream cone...Use

a title like...Here's the Scoop on Frog and Toad...

My current one has "Love Your Library" with notes, drawings,

even a few valentines about how much the kids love reading, me, the

library, etc.

The one before that was a bunch of ice, (made out of blue butcher paper,

penguins, and "Dive into Reading". My next one is going to be: One

Book, Two Books, Read Books, Seuss Books. Using black letters on the

background of a demolished Seuss book

I saw the cutest bulletin board at our church. It had a green and blue
earth in the middle, and the preschool children all around the earth. Someone
took the children's pictures. They were standing with their arms extended
out, and little down. like they were holding someone's hands. Each child
was cut out and placed around the earth, and side by side with another
students. The rings of students went out from the earth to the edge of the
board. The heading was something like, "Love Makes the World Go Round". Could
you use "Reading Makes the World Go Around"? ...Maybe put the book of the
month in the center.

With all of those kindergarteners, do you have any parents that could
volunteer to do the bulletin boards. If you get enough parents involved,
they may only have to do one or two bulletin boards a year. You could put
them on a schedule. Parents on the PTO or PTA are usually very involved. You
would need to give them direction, but if you let them know ASAP what theme
or book they need to do, I'm sure they can even come up with some good
ideas.

Thank you all again
